de Kooning: A Retrospective at MOMA

On September 18 MoMA will open its doors to a retrospective of the works of Willem de Kooning. This is the first  major museum exhibition devoted to de Kooning's long  career as one of the most important artists of the 20th century. I was once told that de Kooning began his abstractions one night when walking into his studio in the half light and seeing a painting leaning upside down against the wall and began painting it as it lay, literally turning his work on itself. I cant vouch for that story, it was told in art school and who knows what we learn there, but I can urge you to visit this show, and it runs for awhile, Jan 2012 so go. And if my words are not enough...
